
Barrowsgate’s dairy cows are unhappy. Peter, the young bullock, explains that this is because the dairy farmer only gets a fraction of the cost of a pint of milk to the consumer. The cows blame the Milk Pool for setting the price that the farmer gets at too low a value, undermining the long-term viability of the industry.
Context: In 1933, the Milk Marketing Board was established to control milk production and distribution in the UK, following outbreaks of discontent amongst dairy farmers in 1932. The “Milk Pool” effectively fixed the price that diary farmers would be paid by the milk processors (i.e. bottling and distribution).
