The Exydus – Pair Twa

Wry observations of rural life in north-east Scotland written in Doric by Barrowsgate.

Barrowsgate is banished to the roof to sweep the chimney. However, he drops the chimney cleaning weight down the chimney, right into the pot in which Mistress Barrowsgate is making some rice pudding.

Note: A popular method of sweeping chimneys in Scotland was the “weight, rope and heather” method. A lead weight attached to a rope and heather “brushes” was repeatedly dropped down the chimney and hauled back up.
