Canadian Emigrant 1908

Jim’s apparently autobiographical story “A Canadian Emigrant” was serialized and published in four parts as “A Colonist in Canada Twenty-Five Years Ago” by “Hugh James” in the Bon Accord in May and June 1934. Jim revised it and it was published again as “Call of the Golden West – Recollections of Thirty Years Ago” by ‘Anzac’ in October 1937 in the Buchan Observer. A typescript (attached below) of this story survives, and it refers to events that occurred “fifty years ago”, so Jim probably tried to get it published for a third time in 1958 but, if he did, it has not come to light. The story recalls the train journey (on one of the “Colonist trains”) that he made across Canada to Calgary after arriving from the UK at Halifax Nova Scotia. Although the typescript is entitled “Canadian Emigrant 1908”, ships’ passenger list records suggest that Jim’s journey actually commenced on 28 March 1910. The story then talks about the practicalities and hardships of establishing a homestead at that time. It contains what would now be seen as some racist stereotypes and antisemitic views of his fellow-passengers on the train journey.
