This is an unusual “story” consisting of a number of anecdotes based on Barrowsgate’s experiences as a “rolling stone”. He recounts various adventures, including travelling to see a heavyweight championship fight in Reno, Nevada, by signing up as a railway navvy. He shares anecdotes about seeing a loaf of bread impaled on a bayonet in a Wyoming museum, encountering a black man with red hair in Arizona, and witnessing the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake, including a gruesome looting incident. He also humorously recounts losing his enthusiasm for bear hunting after receiving advice from an old timer. Each of the anecdotes was probably loosely based on events that Barrowsgate experienced or read about on his travels.
It does not appear to have found a publisher, but the typescript survives. Handwritten notes on it indicate that it was typed at Burnfield, which dates it to around 1950.
