This is a straightforward, apparently factual account of a family holiday around 1923/4 from Adelaide to Cape Jervis. Jim, Janet and the two boys set off from Adelaide in a motor car, towing a boat, packed with camping equipment behind them. The story describes the journey there and how they caught different types of fish, after receiving some useful tips from the local lighthouse keeper. The holiday nearly ends in disaster when Jim loses the key to the boat’s engine and they have to row three miles back to shore.
This story led to Jim’s appearance on the BBC Scotland radio station in 1937 on the Children’s Hour programme. “The Aberdeen Animals” (Brer Rabbit, Squirrel, Howard the Hare, Mr Mole and Miss Mouse) were the hosts of BBC Scottish Children’s Hour during this period.
This story survives as a handwritten manuscript.
