Peace appears to have broken out at the shoemaker’s house. A keen gardener, he is sure he is going to lift the trophy at the upcoming flower show. While he is out, somehow his hens escape from their locked hen house and eat all his plants. He has his suspicions as to who is responsible.

Sandy buys a saucepan, spoon and condiments and finally cooks his eggs, but they turn out to be rotten. He can’t work out how freshly laid eggs can be rotten, but Mistress M’Snob had something to do with it.

Sandy advertises in the Bon Accord for six egg-laying hens. After much deliberation, he agrees terms with the seller and takes possession of them. Although they do indeed lay eggs, Sandy’s wife refuses to cook them, so he resolves to do so himself.
