This apparently unpublished story from around 1938 appears to be based on real event. It tells of Tom Stephenson, an old land owner in Alberta at the time when Jim lived there in 1910. He is forced by the Government to hand over some of his land to incoming homesteaders. One such incomer is Jim Fallon and, one day, his homestead is destroyed by fire. The local community comes together to raise money for Fallon, but Tom Stephenson refuses and is shamed by the local minister for being so mean. In a twist at the end of the story, it turns out that Tom Stephenson had actually restocked Jim’s paddock with horses and cows and was Fallon’s most generous benefactor.
